For his first official visit to Sweden’s southernmost region of Skåne, Ambassador Howery visited Malmö and Lund on October 19-21. His first stop at the visit was at Lund University, where he met with the university leadership headed by Vice Chancellor Torbjörn von Schantz, follwed by a tour of the university-hosted MAX IV lab and a visit to the European Spallation Source, currently under construction outside of Lund.
On day two, Ambassador Howery participated in a Facebook Live “Fireside Chat” with a Malmö tech investor at the Malmö Business Day, which was followed by a meeting with Malmö Mayor Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh. He then visited he Malmö Synagogue for a meeting with leaders of the Malmö Jewish Community. This visit was followed by a meeting with the Muslim and Jewish co-leaders of the interfaith Amanah project. The days was concluded by a speech to Lund University’s Studentafton, followed by a Facebook Live discussion with Lund University political science professor Johannes Lindvall and a Q&A with students. The live stream was followed by more than 2,300 participants online.
For his final day, the Ambassador took part in a wreath-laying at the graves of two U.S. WWII flyers in Malmö, visited the Medeon Science Park, and met with Skåne Governor Anneli Hulthén and other senior regional leaders.
