Applying for a second passport
10 MINUTE READ

The issuance of a second passport is not automatic and should be considered an exception to the regulations.  An application is approved on an individual basis and only when justified.

Second passports may be issued if:

  • A passport is needed both for confirmed travel and submission for foreign visa applications simultaneously;
  • The primary passport is held by the Swedish government or foreign embassy in connection with a citizenship or visa application and the applicant has confirmed travel; and/or
  • The applicant has confirmed travel plans to a foreign country which will deny a visa or entry to the bearer of a passport containing markings or visas showing travel to certain other countries.

To apply for a second valid passport, the applicant will need to follow the instructions below and submit all required documentation either by mail or in person by appointment.

Step 1: Passport Application Form

Please use DS-82 or DS-11, as appropriate. Please go to the Department of State’s website to complete the form online and print.

Step 2: Photographs

Two identical passport photographs are required. The Embassy will reject any photographs that do not meet the specified requirements.

Step 3: Signed Statement

You must include with your application a signed statement giving the reason(s) why the second passport is required. The statement must include the following text:

“Should either of my two passports be lost or stolen, I will report immediately the circumstances of the loss to Passport Services, or if abroad, to the nearest U.S. Embassy, Consulate, or Consular Agency.”

Step 4: Fee

Pay the $130 passport application fee via the U.S. government’s secure payment site, if you are eligible to renew your current passport by mail.  You must print the electronic payment confirmation you receive via email after successfully paying the fee and include it in the package you send to the embassy.  If you are not eligible to renew your current passport by mail and need to apply in person, you may pay by credit or with debit card.  We recommend you confirm with your bank that your card is unlocked for foreign transactions prior to your appointment to avoid any problems with your payment. We do not accept SEK cash payments.  Please consult the Department of State’s Passport Fee Calculator for fee information.

Step 5: Postage

Obtain a pre-paid, self-addressed envelope (with the complete address to which you want your new passport sent within Sweden).  It is no longer possible to send registered mail (REK) with Swedish stamps so please order a shipment label on Postnord’s website.

Step 6: Submit Application

Renewal of second valid passport: Please submit your current second valid passport, copy of normal validity passport, passport application, payment, photos, and the self-addressed return postage label from postnord (not stamps) to the address below.

First-time applicant for a second valid passport: Please submit your original full validity passport, passport application, payment, photos, and the self-addressed return postage label from postnord (not stamps) to the address below.

U.S. Embassy Attn: ACS
Dag Hammarskjolds vag 31
11589 Stockholm

Failure to submit a complete and correct application will delay your case.

Since passports are such valuable documents, we recommend that you use registered mail (REK post) when sending the passport applications to the U.S. Embassy.

If you cannot submit your full validity passport with your application, you must fill out a DS-11 application and appear in person.

Processing Time

Upon receiving a complete application, the processing time for a passport is 3-4 weeks.

Important Notice

If you wish to submit the application in person at the U.S. Embassy you need to set up an appointment.

Please note that it is preferred that you mail in your passport application if you are eligible to use Form DS-82.

Make your appointment.
