Summer is an especially active time for pickpockets/thieves in Sweden and throughout Europe, but there are things you can do to avoid becoming a victim.
Always be aware of your surroundings, and be sure to keep your passport, wallet, and other valuables in a safe and secure place. Backpack holders can try repositioning their backpack in front of them. Some people put a rubber band around their wallet and put it in their front pocket. Purses with zippers – closed, of course – are a lot safer than open-style purses.
In Sweden, popular places for theft are: 1) on various modes of transportation (i.e., ferry, train, bus, car); 2) at fast food places, coffee shops, and restaurants (hotel breakfast buffets are especially popular!); 3) at popular tourist attractions; and 4) at the airport. In almost all cases, the victims left their belongings – e.g., smartphone, backpack, purse, luggage, etc. – unattended (we’re talking even for less than 30 seconds!).
To protect yourself in the event of theft or loss, be sure to make a copy of your passport and have the necessary telephone numbers to cancel any credit cards.
