We get a lot of questions from Swedish residents who want to know for how long their passport have to be valid when traveling to the United States.
As a general rule, passports must be valid for six months beyond the date the traveler will exit the U.S. However, the U.S. has signed agreements with a number of countries, including Sweden, to waive this requirement.
When such an agreement is in place, the passport must be valid for the entire period of the visitor’s intended stay, but the additional six month validity period is not required. Hence, if you hold a Swedish passport, the six months requirement does not apply to you.
The list of all exempted countries can be found at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website.
