You must Apply by Mail if:
- You can submit your most recent passport book and/or U.S. passport card;
- You were at least 16 years old when your most recent passport book and/or passport card was issued;
- You hold a 10-year passport which was issued within the past 15 years;
- Your U.S. Passport has not been limited from the normal 10-year validity period due to passport damage/mutilation or multiple passport thefts/losses; and
- You are not requesting a change in the passport data, other than a name change due to marriage or divorce or court order for which you can submit official documentation (marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order) to support the name change. For a name change in Sweden, please submit a Personbevis (Form 120) from Skatteverket in Swedish in your name with a komplettering for the date and type of name change.
Instructions for DS-82 Processing by Mail and Online Fee Payment
Step 1: Complete the DS-82 Passport Renewal Form . Please complete the entire form online and then print. Be sure to sign and date the form where indicated.
Social Security Number: Please note that according to U.S. law (26 USC 6039E) applicants for U.S. passports must provide a correct Social Security Number on the passport application. Failure to provide a Social Security Number if you have been issued one can result in a $500 fine enforced by the IRS. If you have never been issued a Social Security Number, write zeros in the boxes and sign the affidavit of no Social Security number.
Step 2: Obtain one color passport photo 2” x 2” (5 x 5 cm) taken within the past 6 months; full face, frontal view against a plain white or off-white background.
Step 3: Include one photocopy (color or black and white) of the data page of your previous U.S. passport.
Step 4: Include the passport you are renewing in the package you mail to the Embassy.
Step 5: If you have changed your name since your last passport was issued, you will need to provide evidence of your name change. If you have changed your name in Sweden, you will need to call Skatteverket (0771-567-567) and request a Personbevis in your name with a komplettering showing your name change, section of law, and if you changed your name by marriage, also include your spouse’s name. Please send the original signed and stamped copy with your passport renewal.
Step 6: Pay the $130 passport application fee via the U.S. government’s secure payment site . You must print the electronic payment confirmation you receive via email after successfully paying the fee and include it in the package you send to the embassy. Note: We do not accept any other forms of payment for mail in applications.
Step 7: If you would like your passports returned via a trackable method to a Postnord location use registered mail and obtain a pre-paid, self-addressed envelope size A4 to A5 filled out with the address in Sweden where you want it sent. Registered mail labels should be ordered on Postnord’s website not in person at a Postnord office to avoid problems with the waybill.
If you would like to have your passport delivered by standard service, you may send a stamped self-addressed envelope with enough postage affixed for 250g (for one applicant) or 500g (for two applicants) and your passport will be delivered to you at the address you specify on the envelope. Note that standard service does not allow for tracking of your package.
We do not have stamps for purchase locally. We do not allow pick-ups of new passports you must provide a waybill or stamps to have them mailed back.
IMPORTANT: Include a return address on BOTH the mailing and self-addressed envelope! All envelopes without a return address will be rejected. Be advised that the addressee must present a valid Swedish ID to retrieve registered mail from the designated local delivery location.
Step 7: Mail all the items listed above to the U.S. Embassy in Sweden at the address below using registered mail .

Passport processing takes approximately 5-7 weeks.
You must Apply In Person If:
- You are applying for your first U.S. passport;
- You are under age 16;
- Your previous U.S. passport was issued when you were under age 16;
- Your previous U.S. passport was issued more than 15 years ago;
- Your name has changed since your U.S. passport was issued and you are unable to document your name change; or
- Your passport was lost, stolen, or damaged.
Instructions to Apply for a Passport in person
Step 1: Complete the form DS-11. Complete the form online, and then print it. Do not sign it.
Step 2: Obtain two passport photos. Photo standards are listed on the travel.state page.
Step 3: Evidence of U.S. citizenship – such evidence may include but is not limited to:
- U.S. Birth Certificate
- Consular Report of Birth Abroad
- Expired U.S. Passport
- U.S. Passport Card
Step 4: Valid Identification document for the applicant and one copy. If you have a new generation Swedish passport, you will need copies of both the photo and signature pages.
Step 5: If you have changed your name since your last passport was issued, you will need to provide evidence of your name change. Step 8: Payment for the passport application is made at the Embassy on the day of the interview. The fee is $165 for first-time adult passports and $135 for minor passports. You may pay by credit or with debit card. We recommend you confirm with your credit card company that your card is unlocked for foreign transactions prior to your appointment to avoid any problems with your payment. We do not accept SEK cash payments. If you bring all of the required documents above to your interview, the standard processing time is 5-7 weeks.
