Renew a Passport

You can renew your U.S. passport by mail if ALL of the following are true:

Your most recent U.S. passport:

  • Is undamaged and can be submitted with your application;
  • Was issued when you were age 16 or older;
  • Was issued within the last 15 years; and
  • Was issued in the exact same name as your previous passport or you can legally document your name change with original or certified copy of your marriage certificate or the government-issued document evidencing your legal name change under federal or state law.

If any of the above statements do not apply to you, you must apply in person.

Please note: The fee for mail-in applications has been updated to SEK 935. Please be sure to send a postväxel with your application in the new amount of SEK 935. Postväxlar received in any other amount that SEK 935 will be returned to sender. 

Please use Form DS 82 (PDF – 73KB). You can either complete the form by hand or go to the Department of State’s website to complete the form online and print. Note: Please disregard the instructions printed on pages 1-2 on the form since that information pertains to passport processing when residing in the U.S.

Social Security Number: Please note that according to U.S. law (26 USC 6039E) applicants for U.S. passports must provide a correct Social Security Number on the passport application. Failure to provide a Social Security Number if you have been issued one can result in a $500 fine enforced by the IRS. If you have never been issued a Social Security Number, write zeros in the boxes and sign the affidavit of no Social Security number.

Two identical passport photographs are required. The Embassy will reject any photographs that do not meet the specified requirements.

Payment should be made by a Swedish bank check (postväxel), available from any bank, payable to the U.S. Embassy. Personal checks, cash, bank checks from the U.S. and postal money orders (“postanvisning”) are not accepted. The fee for passport renewal by mail is $110.00 or SEK 935.00. Checks in amounts other than this will be returned to the sender.

Please note that if you would like to apply for a passport card in conjunction with a mail-in passport application DS-82, you must you must submit an additional bank check (postväxel), in the amount of $30/SEK 255.

It is no longer possible to send Registered mail (REK) with Swedish Stamps so please order a mailing label on Postnord’s website. Failure to submit a shipment label for return postage for your passport according to the following instructions will only result in delays.

The recipient (Till) is the person to which you would like your passport to be delivered (that is the name of the passport holder for an adult and the name of a parent for a minor).

Be advised that the addressee must present a valid Swedish ID to retrieve registered mail from the designated local delivery location.

Passport cards: An application for a passport book will take approximately three weeks to process and for a passport card, six to eight weeks.  If you would like to receive your passport book before the passport card, please provide two return envelopes with your application. Otherwise we will keep your passport book until we receive the passport card.

Please send your current passport, passport application, payment, photos, and the self-addressed return postage label from postnord (not stamps) to the following address:

Failure to submit a complete and correct application will delay your case.

Since passports are such valuable documents, we recommend that you use registered mail (REK post) when sending the passport applications to the U.S. Embassy.

Upon receiving a complete application, the processing time for a passport is approximately 15 business days.

Important Notice

If you wish to submit the application in person at the U.S. Embassy you need to set up an appointment. When on the appointment website choose the service called “Apply for a U.S. passport for the first time.”

Please note that it is preferred that you mail in your passport application if you are eligible to use Form DS-82.
